What defines the Riviera Maya? (TST)
The coastline running from south of Cancun down through Tulum and into Sian Ka'an — roughly 130 km of beach, reef, and jungle. Highlights: Akumal, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Xcaret, Soliman Bay, Tulum, and the UNESCO-protected Sian Ka'an biosphere. (TST)
How does Akumal differ from Tulum? (TST)
Akumal is calmer, older, and family-oriented. Smaller footprint, protected swimming bays, excellent reef snorkeling directly from shore, and none of the beach-club sprawl of Tulum. Many repeat travelers prefer Akumal for this reason — less visible, more consistent. (TST)
What's Sian Ka'an like? (TST)
Wilder, quieter, and harder to reach. Rough coastal road, minimal development, world-class birdwatching, boat tours through mangroves, and beaches that genuinely feel remote. Day trip from a Tulum villa: absolutely. Base for a stay: only if you want serious disconnection. (TST)
Which area is best for first-time visitors? (TST)
Soliman Bay or Akumal. Both give you the quiet, protected beach and villa atmosphere without the intensity of Tulum town. Tulum town itself is worth half a day for restaurants — not usually a full day. (TST)
Can we see cenotes and Mayan ruins nearby? (TST)
Yes. Coba (massive pyramid you can still climb in some areas), Muyil (smaller and quieter, in Sian Ka'an), Tulum Ruins (dramatic setting on a cliff), and hundreds of cenotes within a 45-minute drive. Chichen Itza is further — 2.5 hours each way — doable but requires a full day. (TST)
