Frequently asked questions about Tulum Essentials (TST)

Which area of Tulum should we stay in? (TST)

Soliman Bay for privacy and calm water — best all-around. Tankah Bay for a quieter beach and larger estates. Akumal for snorkeling and family-friendly swimming. The main beach road for proximity to restaurants but more crowds. Each has a distinct rhythm. The concierge can match you to the right stretch. (TST)

Is the beach road in Tulum worth staying on? (TST)

It's a different product. Closer to restaurants, beach clubs, and nightlife — but busier, louder, and increasingly unpredictable with sargassum. For restraint, quiet, and pristine beaches, head to Soliman Bay or Tankah (10–20 minutes north). For atmosphere and scene, stay on the beach road. (TST)

What's the sargassum situation? (TST)

Sargassum (seaweed) is real, seasonal, and unpredictable. Worst months: May through August. Least affected: November through February. Soliman Bay and Tankah tend to be less impacted than the main beach zone. Staff rake the beach daily regardless, but some days the sea isn't swimmable. Plan boat days and cenote mornings for backup. Do we need Spanish to visit Tulum? (TST)

No. Villa staff, restaurants, guides, and drivers all speak English. A few phrases go a long way with drivers and beach vendors but nothing is required. Spanish is appreciated, never expected. (TST)

What should we pack? (TST)

Light layers, two swimsuits minimum, reef-safe sunscreen, a light long-sleeve for sunset bugs, comfortable sandals, and one "nice but not formal" outfit for dinner. Everything else — yoga mats, beach games, bathroom products, umbrellas — is at the villa. (TST)
